I often travel over the bridge in I71 that connects Ohio with Northern Kentucky. Generally, there is a backup on the 50+ year old bridge that carries twice its designed traffic level. The bad news is they will close half the lanes for maintenance. (I guess I won’t be going to Cincinnati any time soon). And this bridge is just one of about 84,000 U.S. bridges that the Federal Highway Administration considers functionally obsolete. My own state of Tennessee (and 24 other states) just increased the gas tax to pay for infrastructure replacement. I have spoken out in the past about gas taxes as many of the dollars spent at the federal level are spent on non-highway items like the NY transit system – that is a travesty! Hopefully my state will be more prudent. In any event, expect to see a slow increase in diesel costs.
