There have been 4 major ship fires in 4 months. While this is exceptional, and we hope a blue-moon event, the reality is that shippers need to take significant responsibility. Undeclared hazardous goods and poorly packed dangerous goods subject to the constant movement of the ship, may be the cause of these blazes. And they are hard to put out – the fire on the Maersk Honam (a 15,000 TEU ship) took 5 weeks to put out.
